Version 7.7.2
France's attack on America's human rights record is shameful grandstanding that deserves zero tolerance. The U.N. human rights chief has criticized the U.S. more than China, North Korea and Cuba combined — that's the broken institution France is defending. Walking out on French statements at the Security Council is exactly the right move until Paris drops its condescending rhetoric.
America just used a walkout — a move historically reserved for snubbing pariahs — against its oldest ally, demanding an apology for being called out after voting alongside Russia and North Korea against the U.N. human rights chief. A 144-10 vote is not a close call, and storming out of a Security Council meeting on Ukraine rather than engaging the argument looks more like deflection than moral clarity.
