Somalia remains on the travel ban list for good reason. The country continues to struggle with weak state control, terrorist safe havens and immigration concerns. The Trump administration was right to prioritize security screening over FIFA credentials. No referee, athlete or official should be exempt from rules designed to protect U.S. borders and national security. Those rules only work if applied consistently, regardless of status or profession.
Trump's barring of Africa's top referee from the World Cup is a betrayal of the sport's core values. Omar Artan earned his place on merit, traveled with valid documents and a diplomatic passport, yet was turned away in Miami without any public explanation. Hosting a global tournament while excluding one of Africa's most respected officials because he comes from a travel-banned country makes a mockery of football's promise of fairness and equal opportunity.
