UN Council Condemns RSF Violence in El-Obeid

The U.N. Human Rights Council passed a motion on Monday condemning escalating Rapid Support Forces (RSF) violence around El-Obeid and ordered an urgent inquiry into alleged abuses. The resolution, adopted by consensus, was brought forward by Britain and 14 other countries.

As violence around El-Obeid continues to escalate, more than 11,000 people — including over 5,500 children — have been newly displaced, according to Save the Children. The U.N. warns that up to 500,000 civilians could face the risk of large-scale atrocities if the situation deteriorates further.

At least 45 civilians were killed in El-Obeid in three weeks in June, according to the U.N., as drone strikes repeatedly hit markets, schools, fuel stations and water infrastructure. Last week, a drone also struck an aid convoy en route to the city.

The RSF has been accused of committing atrocities during its October 2025 seizure of El Fasher, including mass executions and widespread sexual violence. The U.N. said the El Fasher campaign bore "hallmarks of genocide," and warned El-Obeid could face similar violence.

RSF forces have razed multiple villages near Sudan's western border with Chad, displacing more than 3,500 people from one village alone. A separate U.N. report found the RSF killed or injured "at least 330 children" in the first six months of 2026.

The U.N. Human Rights Council's unanimous condemnation of RSF violence around al-Obeid sends a clear message that the international community will not stand by in the face of atrocities against civilians. Sustained diplomatic pressure, coordinated sanctions and stronger accountability measures are essential to isolating the RSF. Protecting civilians requires the international community to remain united and increase pressure on all those fueling the conflict.

Establishment-critical narrative

Condemnations ring hollow when governments refuse to confront the actors enabling the violence. As long as the West's strategic and commercial interests with partners such as the UAE outweigh meaningful pressure on the conflict's external backers, diplomatic statements become little more than political theater. Preventing further atrocities requires holding not only those committing them accountable, but also those financing, arming and sustaining them.
