The Facts

  • An inquest opening at Doncaster Coroner's Court heard Thursday that William Chapman, 24, died from multiple traumatic injuries after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. A full inquest is scheduled for March 18 next year.
  • Chapman had a history of mental illness, a diagnosis of schizophrenia and previous bouts of psychosis, the inquest heard. He was under adult mental health services in Doncaster but was "highly functioning and independent with no care requirements."
  • Coroner's officer Caitlin Brookes said Chapman's family raised "a number of concerns" about his contact with mental health services. The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust has commissioned an independent patient safety investigation.

The Spin

Narrative A

A vulnerable adult who couldn't grasp the danger should never have been left alone at a big cat exhibit. Safeguarding means real supervision and barriers designed for people who process risk differently, not a fence and a hope-for-the-best approach. Calling this a freak accident lets gross negligence off the hook.

Narrative B

Barriers at a wildlife park exist for one reason: to keep people alive, and they work until someone climbs over. A tiger acting on pure instinct inside its own enclosure has done nothing wrong, and blaming the animal or the park would be absurd. Modern comfort has bred a dangerous illusion that wild predators have somehow been tamed.
