While the data breach was an inexcusable mistake, every step taken since has been a calculated decision to prevent the Taliban from acting on the information and has bought time to evacuate those at highest risk. As should be expected, the government has now closed the scheme, lifted the court order, apologized to Parliament and is honoring every outstanding relocation commitment.

This is exactly what happens when you place life or death information in the hands of untrained civil servants. Dozens of people linked to the leak have been killed, a large majority have reported direct threats, and yet the government sat on the secret for 18 months before slapping a super-injunction on the whole mess. Sensitive casework was never the MoD's job, and this disaster proves it should never be again.
