Finally, the justice system has a consistent method for spotting abusers instead of treating each assault separately. Flagging abuse at conviction means police, prisons and probation can see the whole pattern and tailor the right interventions before someone else gets hurt. Backed by serious money for victim services and tougher protection orders, this is real progress toward preventing violence against women and girls.
A label on a court record means little when the man wearing it can waltz out the prison gate. Labour's scheme to release domestic abusers, stalkers and violent offenders early sends the message that there are no real consequences to such heinous crimes. Getting serious about violence against women and girls starts with keeping these criminals locked up, instead of allowing them to prowl the streets.
