UK Approves Wegovy Weight-Loss Pill

Is this a breakthrough for obesity care or a dangerous shortcut that ignores root causes?

The U.K.'s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved the Wegovy weight-loss pill on Thursday, making the U.K. the first European country and third country globally — behind the U.S. and United Arab Emirates — to authorize the oral treatment.

The pill, which contains semaglutide, is approved for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or those with a BMI of 27 to 30 who have at least one weight-related condition. Clinical trial data from the OASIS 4 study showed participants lost roughly 14-17% of their body weight after 64 weeks.

Patients must take the tablet whole on an empty stomach after fasting for at least eight hours, with a sip of water, then avoid food or drink for at least 30 minutes. The most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal, including nausea, diarrhea, constipation and vomiting.

The Wegovy pill, however, will not be made available on the NHS until the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) completes its assessment. NICE said Novo Nordisk had not yet submitted evidence for appraisal, though the two parties are in active dialogue.

Retailers including Boots, Superdrug and Morrisons are among those expected to offer the pill via private prescription within weeks of the approval. In the U.S., the pill has generally been priced lower than the injection, with the starting dose listed at around $149 per month.

The news comes as a rival oral weight-loss drug, Orforglipron, developed by Eli Lilly and marketed as Foundayo, is awaiting a regulatory decision in the U.K. Trials for this treatment showed that patients on the highest 36mg dose lost an average of 11.2% of their body weight over 72 weeks.
