The Facts
- The Justice Department charged former FBI officials Nikki Floris and Bradley Benavides on Friday with making false statements to Congress about their involvement in investigations of Hunter Biden, and both appeared in federal court in Washington.
- Floris, whose charges stem from an inquiry into the former task force, led the now-disbanded Foreign Influence Task Force from mid-2019 to mid-2022, while Benavides served as section chief through the 2020 election. The accused surrendered themselves to authorities Friday.
- Prosecutors allege Floris denied knowing that Hunter Biden was discussed by the task force, while Benavides claimed he learned from Wikipedia that the FBI had the laptop. Authorities cite communications and accounts that prosecutors say contradict them.

Republican narrative
Senior law enforcement officials who mislead Congress under oath deserve prosecution, no matter how many years the badge was worn. Steering the public narrative about a candidate's family while denying any involvement is the kind of political meddling that wrecks trust in federal institutions. Accountability here is the bare minimum.
Democratic narrative
Charges filed days before an election, years after the testimony and without a grand jury show this is clearly politically motivated. Warning about foreign interference in 2020 was the job, and those warnings held up once the star witness behind the Biden corruption claims confessed to peddling Russian disinformation.
