Version 7.6.4
Federal marijuana legalization risks repeating many of the same mistakes made with tobacco and opioids. Today's cannabis is far more potent than the drug many Americans associate with the 1970s, with growing evidence that it poses a series of health risks, especially to young people. Legalizing it, therefore, could create a public health crisis for very little gain.
Given that the vast majority of Americans support marijuana legalization, including in both parties, it is high past time Congress catches up. This change means an end to elected officials overriding voter-approved measures and to treating cannabis consumers like criminals, in favor of a government-regulated solution that is safer and fairer for all Americans.
