The student visa system has been abused for years, with schools rubber-stamping internships that have nothing to do with actual coursewor, and that stops now. CPT was never meant to be a backdoor work permit, and schools that treated it that way deserve scrutiny. Tightening these rules will protect American graduates competing for the same jobs.
Gutting work opportunities for foreign students doesn't protect Americans. Rather, it hollows out the research labs, hospitals and tech firms that keep the U.S. competitive. With these students contributing nearly $44 billion to the economy and earning nearly half of all STEM PhDs, driving them away through regulations like this will only hand that advantage to rival nations.
