The TikTok USDS Joint Venture is a genuine national security win, protecting American data, retraining the algorithm domestically and creating a majority-American board to call the shots. With ByteDance's ownership dropping to under 20%, Congress's divestiture law is also satisfied, which allows 200 million Americans to stay on the platform they love without handing the keys to Beijing.
Government-critical narrative
The divestiture deal did nothing to shake ByteDance's control over TikTok's algorithm, meaning Beijing retains the most powerful tool for shaping what Americans see and believe. Neither does it do anything to stop Chinese hackers or insider threats from accessing the same massive troves of American user data. In every way that matters, this agreement fails any national security test.
