The Facts

  • Golf legend Tiger Woods was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) after crashing his Land Rover SUV near his residence in Jupiter Island, Florida on Friday.
  • Sheriff John Budensiek of the Martin County Sheriff's Office said the 15-time major winner was also charged with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.
  • Budensiek said Woods, 50, was traveling at a "high rate of speed" on a road with a 30 mph limit and had been attempting to overtake a truck towing a trailer. Woods proceeded to clip the trailer's edge, causing his vehicle to roll onto the driver's side and skid across the concrete. Woods emerged from the passenger side door without injuries, the official added.

The Spin

Narrative A

After Woods was seen competing in golf for the first time since July 2024 earlier this week, fans of the sport had hoped it meant he would be making his return for the Masters at Augusta in a few weeks' time. However, after this latest incident and his well-documented troubles continuing, the prospect looks less than likely at this stage.

Narrative B

This is now the fourth time that the golf star has been involved in a major crash. It is abundantly clear that he needs major help. Not with his swing or his putting technique, but with his troubling decisions that may cost him his life, or the life of someone else, if he's not careful and this trend continues unabated.
