The Facts

  • Spanish soccer club CD Tenerife announced Tuesday that striker Jesus de Miguel died at 8 a.m. at the age of 30, a day after he was struck in the chest while challenging FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono for the ball. The club said there were "no words of comfort."
  • Medical staff performed CPR for about 10 minutes on the pitch, and De Miguel regained a pulse in the ambulance to hospital, where he was treated for head and chest injuries. Tenerife said his condition worsened neurologically around 5 a.m. Tuesday.
  • The score was 2-2 in second-half stoppage time when Owono rushed out of his goal and collided with De Miguel, drawing a straight red card from referee Manuel Angel Perez Hernandez. The match, moved from Sunday to Monday because of rain, was abandoned.

The Spin

Narrative A

Stepping onto a field means accepting the risks of a contact sport, and a split-second challenge for a loose ball sits nowhere near criminal intent. A tragic outcome does not turn an honest mistake into murder, especially when failures in the medical response piled onto the misfortune. A tough, exemplary suspension answers recklessness; a prison cell answers nothing.

Narrative B

A raised leg and excessive force go far beyond bad luck, and recklessness that extreme belongs in front of a judge, not just a disciplinary panel. Shrugging off a death as part of the game guarantees dangerous play keeps showing up every weekend. Nothing short of a manslaughter case and a permanent end to a playing career comes close to real accountability.
