Version 7.17.1
Not merely a few officers saying the wrong thing. This show of force against an LGBTQ venue, complete with slurs, kneeling and handcuffs, revives police surveillance and stigma that these vulnerable communities endured decades ago. Taipei cannot market itself as progressive abroad while allowing discriminatory enforcement at home. Real accountability requires an independent probe, public findings and reforms beyond diversity training.
Equality under the law cuts both ways, and that was always the bargain behind marriage rights. Public indecency, nudity and drug use get enforced against straight venues, so exempting gay bars would be the actual discrimination. Securing equal legal standing means surrendering the unwritten exemptions that once came with being treated as a special case.
A raid just weeks before Pride looks less like a sudden public-safety priority than election-season fearmongering. Taipei police have raided these venues before, but reviving lurid warnings about drugs and sex now lets officials appeal to public anxieties while politicians posture as tough on vice. With elections next month, the timing is hard to ignore.
