Writing off South Africa as a failed state ignores a democracy that still delivers real political choice. A record 136,790 candidates are contesting municipal elections, while the ANC's loss of its national majority in 2024 led to a coalition government, not chaos. Ramaphosa's municipal reforms and push for accountability deserve a fair chance. Cooperation across party lines offers a more promising future than predictions of inevitable decline.
Decades of ANC dominance have left taps dry, sewage in the streets and cities cycling through mayors like disposable goods. A party that treats promises as political currency while nearly half the drinking water systems fail has earned every point of support it keeps losing. Fragmented councils and uneasy coalitions may be messy, but they offer more accountability than another term of comfortable majorities that deliver little beyond broken promises.
