Researchers have identified Nagatitan chaiyaphumensis, the largest dinosaur ever found in Southeast Asia, measuring 27 meters in length and weighing between 25 and 28 tonnes. The findings were published in the journal Scientific Reports on Thursday.

The fossils were first spotted by a local resident in Chaiyaphum Province in 2016, while scientists subsequently excavated spine, rib, pelvis and leg bones — including a front leg bone measuring 1.78 meters. Funding gaps delayed the project until excavation resumed in 2024.

Nagatitan belonged to a subgroup of sauropods called somphospondylans, which possessed bones with internal air sacs and thin walls that lightened their skeletons. Researchers placed it within Euhelopodidae, a group found primarily in Asia.
