The Facts

Research published in Environmental Science & Technology on Wednesday found that liquid crystal monomers — critical components used in laptop, television, and smartphone screens to control how light passes through displays — are accumulating in the tissues of dolphins and porpoises in the South China Sea.

PHYS
Researchers analyzed tissue samples from Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins and finless porpoises collected between 2007 and 2021 in the South China Sea. The study screened blubber, muscle, liver, kidney and brain tissue samples for 62 individual liquid crystal monomers.

EurekAlert!
Four compounds accounted for the majority of liquid crystal monomers detected in the marine mammals. Most of the compounds found likely originated from television and computer screens, with smaller contributions coming from smartphones.

PHYS
Liquid crystal monomer levels in porpoise blubber fluctuated over time, generally increasing as liquid crystal display use expanded and then declining in recent years as manufacturers shifted to more LED displays.

EurekAlert!
Although contaminants were most concentrated in blubber, researchers discovered small amounts in other organs, particularly the brain. According to the researchers, this finding demonstrates the chemicals' ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, revealing potential neurotoxic risks.

Lab tests showed several common liquid crystal monomers altered gene activity related to DNA repair and cell division in cultured dolphin cells. Researchers have called for urgent regulatory action and improved electronic waste disposal to protect marine wildlife.

Narrative A

Electronic waste is poisoning marine life at an alarming rate, with screen chemicals now accumulating in dolphin brains and crossing the blood-brain barrier. These persistent pollutants from everyday devices infiltrate coastal waters through the food chain, altering gene activity and posing neurotoxic risks to endangered species. Urgent regulatory action on e-waste disposal is essential to prevent further contamination of ocean ecosystems.

Narrative B

The display industry is actively transforming through sustainable manufacturing practices that dramatically reduce environmental impact while maintaining performance standards. Innovations such as biodegradable materials, renewable energy integration, and closed-loop recycling systems cut carbon emissions by over 50% and recover up to 80% of valuable resources. Advanced lifecycle management and responsible disposal programs prove that technological progress and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
