Russia Claims Capture of Donetsk's Kostyantynivka

The Facts

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday that Russian forces had taken control of the Donetsk city of Kostyantynivka. "Kostyantynivka has been completely taken," he told reporters. "The city is now entirely under our control."

The same claim was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin as he was seen in military fatigues visiting a command post and meeting with military leadership earlier in the day, describing the capture as "of great strategic importance."

Kostyantynivka is the first of four cities including Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk that make up what's known as Donetsk's "Fortress Belt." Its elevated terrain is seen as crucial in Ukraine's defense of the 20% of the Donetsk region that remains under its control.

However, in the latest analysis from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a U.S. think tank that tracks troop positions in the conflict, it accused Putin of "aggrandizing claims of purported Russian advances" across the military theater, including in Kostyantynivka.

"Russian forces have achieved tactical gains within Kostyantynivka in recent weeks, but the bulk of the Russian presence in the city is comprised of small groups of infiltrators interspersed with Ukrainian positions," ISW said.
