Ecuador is one of America's fiercest partners in the hemisphere in the battle against narcoterrorists. Backing that support through funding and equipment is money well spent. It must be remembered that these gangs are not ordinary mobsters, but rather akin to small armies, highly trained and extremely dangerous. The scale of the threat warrants this level of response.
The U.S. complains about Ecuador's gangs, but does little to undermine these criminal networks. U.S.-made weapons continue to flow into the hands of these organizations, strengthening them, while U.S. tariffs, deportations and taxes on remittances dampen the country's economic dynamism. If the U.S. wants to affect change Ecuador, it should stop stifling the nation's economy and sovereignty.
