This heat-powered cooling breakthrough could reshape how the world handles refrigeration and AI data center energy use. By pairing two nickel-titanium films, the system converts waste heat and solar energy directly into cooling — no electricity, no harmful refrigerants. Scaling this up means processors could cool themselves using their own waste heat, slashing energy costs and cutting the carbon footprint of global cooling systems.
Calling this a cooling revolution is getting way ahead of the actual results. The prototype produced just 2.09 milliwatts of cooling power, nowhere near what modern processors or AI accelerators demand. Slow actuation, limited strain rate and a constrained heat-exchanger geometry all cap performance at a level that makes real-world data center use a distant prospect. The underlying concept is clever, but the gap between lab curiosity and deployable technology remains enormous.
