Sitting out while Beijing locks up Myanmar's pipelines and minerals is strategic malpractice. Two decades of sanctions and sermons haven't improved governance one bit, but the resulting power vacuum has benefited Moscow and Beijing immensely. A seat at the table buys real influence, diversifies critical mineral supply chains and keeps the Indo-Pacific from quietly becoming China's backyard.
Cozying up to a junta accused of genocide, over minerals Beijing already controls, is a bad trade. The regime has done nothing to change its tune, persisting with rigged elections, mass arrests and its abuse of emergency decrees. If the administration continues to reengage the military government, the U.S. will gain little to nothing at a huge cost to its legitimacy and international reputation.
