Polish Lawmakers Ease Abortion Laws, Veto Looms
Is this an overdue step toward women's autonomy or a betrayal that strips the unborn of legal protection?

The Facts
- Poland's lower house approved two bills easing abortion rules on Tuesday. A measure partially decriminalizing help in obtaining an abortion passed 217-213, while a bill allowing abortion in cases of severe fetal abnormalities passed 233-203.
- President Karol Nawrocki is set to block the measures, his chief of staff Zbigniew Bogucki indicated Tuesday, recalling that Nawrocki campaigned on protecting life from conception to natural death. Both bills will now go to the Senate.
- All voting Civic Coalition, Left and Together lawmakers backed the bills, while several Polish People's Party members voted against them and 11 PiS lawmakers, including Jaroslaw Kaczynski, abstained on the fetal abnormality bill.

Women deserve full control over their lives and bodies — decisions over female reproductive rights should not be left to a bishop or prosecutor. Dropping criminal penalties for anyone who helps a woman in crisis is long overdue, yet stopping short of abortion on request leaves most women forced to travel abroad or pursue unsafe, illegal paths to termination.
Right narrative
Every human life carries an inalienable dignity — sick or disabled unborn children deserve protection. Handing impunity to those who break the law and end pregnancies illegally guts the only legal shield the most vulnerable have left. Trading the lives of children for political convenience is a betrayal no constitution should allow.
