At least 24 people are dead and roughly 70 more are injured, according to officials, after an explosive-laden car detonated near a train station in Pakistan's Balochistan province on Sunday.

In a statement sent to reporters, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), an outlawed separatist militia — designated a terror group in a number of countries including the U.S. and U.K. — claimed responsibility for the attack. It alleged that a train carrying Pakistani military personnel was targeted.

According to a senior Pakistani official interviewed by Al Jazeera, an explosive-laden car was driven into the moving train and the official seemingly confirmed the train had been carrying security personnel. However, officially, Pakistani officials including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari described it as an act of terrorism.

While Balochistan has long been at the heart of low-level insurgency, and the BLA has been around since the year 2000, Pakistani officials started using the term "Fitna Al-Hindustan" to describe the BLA since last year, accusing it of being funded by India to sow discord in the nation.

Earlier this year, Pakistan's military announced that it has killed 216 BLA operatives in a week-long security operation after the BLA launched a number of coordinated attacks in January. In that attack, at least 31 people were killed, 19 of which were confirmed to be security officials.
