Ofcom's fine marks a landmark enforcement action — the largest of its kind under the Online Safety Act — proving the U.K.'s online safety laws have real teeth against platforms hosting illegal suicide content. The regulator methodically built an airtight case, and the provider now faces a full court-ordered block if it doesn't comply within 10 working days. This is exactly how robust regulation should work.
Ofcom's fine against a forum linked to over 164 U.K. deaths is too little, too late. Bereaved families had to drag the regulator into action while more lives were lost. A 13-month investigation is inexcusable when coroners warned the government 65 times about this forum's deadly content. A fine alone won't cut it. More aggressive legal actions are needed to curb this dangerous content.
