The unveiling of Norway's memorial to the 77 victims of Breivik's 2011 attacks is a powerful reminder that right-wing terror remains a real and present threat to democracy. Hate speech, conspiracy theories and political violence have evolved. Honoring those lost means refusing to be naive about the ideology that killed them.
Framing the Breivik attacks as proof of a broad right-wing threat is exactly the witch-hunt the killer's own manifesto called for — he explicitly wanted to provoke repression of conservatives to radicalize and polarize. Treating a lone psychopath's rampage as a political indictment of mainstream conservatism plays directly into his stated strategy and does nothing to honor victims.
