Elon Musk's xAI announced on Tuesday that it had raised $20 billion in its Series E funding round, exceeding its initial target of $15 billion amid growing international concern regarding Grok AI's content.

The AI company's latest investors included NVIDIA and Cisco Investments on a strategic level, along with Valor Equity Partners, Fidelity, Qatar Investment Authority, MGX, Baron Capital Group and other partners.

In a press release, xAI confirmed that it is currently training Grok 5 and planning to launch new consumer products designed to "transform how we live, work and play." The company also revealed that it has more than 600 million monthly active users across X and Grok.

xAI, however, has come under fire, after its Grok chatbot began generating sexually explicit images of children and nonconsensual images of primarily adult women in recent weeks, which users subsequently shared on X.

The development prompted a regulatory response across multiple jurisdictions — including the EU, the U.K., India, Malaysia and France — with investigations launched, ultimatums issued and formal warnings given.

On its Safety account, X posted that it was taking action against illegal content on the platform through takedowns, permanent account suspensions and cooperation with authorities, warning those using Grok to produce such material that they will "suffer the same consequences" as if they uploaded it themselves.
