Minnesota lawmakers failed the Annunciation community by letting Republican leadership block an assault weapons ban that could have prevented two children from being killed. Thousands of parents, students and faith leaders showed up at the Capitol demanding change, and GOP leadership refused to even call a vote. With the community still reeling a year later, it's time the government finally heed their calls and put children's safety over politics.
Right narrative
Banning assault weapons wouldn't have saved anyone at Annunciation — the shooter deliberately targeted a gun-free zone because it guaranteed unarmed victims. Magazine limits and weapon bans only burden law-abiding citizens while doing nothing to stop someone willing to commit murder. The lesson from Annunciation is that defenseless populations invite attack, while armed, prepared citizens are the real deterrent.

Beyond pro- and anti-gun politics, the Annunciation shooting was part of a nihilistic shooter culture that grooms isolated youth in online spaces within weeks, stacked on top of a psych drug system whose own FDA labels warn of hostility and aggression. It appears Westman was at least steeped in the online culture, but many shooters are absorbed by both, which is something both sides can support looking into.
