The Facts

  • Mike Ditka, the Hall of Fame tight end who coached the Chicago Bears to the franchise's only Super Bowl title, died Friday at age 86. His family announced the death in a statement calling him "the heart of our family" who will be "missed beyond measure."
  • No cause of death was announced. Ditka suffered heart attacks in 1988 and 2018, as well as a minor stroke in 2012.
  • Ditka's 1985 Bears routed the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX, at the time the most lopsided victory in the game's history. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement, said that Ditka brought "intensity, authenticity and an unmistakable personality" to his work.

The Spin

Narrative A

Nobody in Chicago sports casts a bigger shadow than Ditka. That swagger, the scowl and the willingness to brawl with anybody turned a football team into a cultural movement that fans still imitate decades later. Coaches lighting up this rivalry today are simply borrowing from a blueprint written with pure fire.

Narrative B

Ditka earned reverence, yet the full picture beats the myth every time. The same stubborn ego that built a champion also burned bridges, wore down a roster stacked with stars and never delivered another title run in Chicago or New Orleans. Honest remembrance keeps the brilliance and the blowups together, rough edges and all.
