UK: MI5 Pays Compensation to Woman Abused by Neo-Nazi Informant

MI5 has agreed to pay compensation to a woman who alleged she was coercively controlled and attacked with a machete by one of the agency's paid informants, referred to publicly as Agent X.

MI5 Director General Sir Ken McCallum said the agency "sincerely apologise[s]... for the distress she has suffered because of MI5 mistakes in this litigation" and acknowledged that "record keeping fell well short of the standard of professionalism" expected.

The legal claim was settled at the Investigatory Powers Tribunal without admission of liability. Solicitor Kate Ellis of the Centre for Women's Justice said a full hearing "would, in my view, have been highly embarrassing for MI5."
