Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf in Addis Ababa on Tuesday, with both sides agreeing to hold annual high-level political consultations and prepare a new cooperation framework for 2027-2029.

The talks laid groundwork for the third Russia-Africa Summit, scheduled for Oct. 28-29 in Moscow. AU Commission Chairperson Youssouf said current Russia-Africa trade stands at around $27 billion, adding that "in the coming years these figures may be doubled."

The AU and Russia also agreed to explore closer collaboration with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to address Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda, covering surveillance, laboratory capacity and emergency response.

Both sides pledged to ensure uninterrupted supplies of food, fertilizers and agricultural inputs to African markets while strengthening agricultural cooperation to boost food production and resilience. The consultations concluded with an agreement to institutionalize annual high-level political consultations.

This comes as a U.S. Africa Command general told Congress in May that Russia has extracted more than $2.5 billion worth of gold from Africa since 2022, primarily from the Central African Republic (CAR), Mali and Sudan.
