The Facts

  • Japan carried out its first execution under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's government on Friday, executing Sunao Takami, 58, who was convicted of murder, attempted murder and arson for setting a pachinko parlor in Osaka ablaze in 2009, killing five people and injuring 10.
  • In a press conference, Japanese Justice Minister Hiroshi Hiraguchi said that, in light of the facts of the case, and after careful and repeated consideration, he ordered Takami's execution on Tuesday, which took place at Osaka Detention House.
  • His actions, Hiraguchi claimed, were premeditated and calculated, "extremely cruel and heinous," caused lasting damage to both the families of those who died as well as the survivors and had sparked significant fear and shock in society.

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Japan's execution of Sunao Takami was a just and necessary application of the law. His actions killed five innocent people horrifically in a premeditated arson, and the courts carefully weighed every factor before handing down a death sentence. Only for the most heinous crimes like these is the death penalty considered; abandoning it would be a catastrophic failure of justice.

Government-critical narrative

Executing Sunao Takami ignores serious concerns about mental illness at the time of the crime and makes any potential miscarriage of justice permanent and irreversible. Capital punishment is incompatible with the right to life, fails as a crime deterrent and eliminates any possibility of rehabilitation. With the world moving away from this archaic practice, Japan should follow.
