The U.K. government takes JLR's announcement seriously and is more than aware of the uncertainty it plunges workers and local suppliers into. Blind state interventions, however, are not a viable strategy. That's why the government is meeting representatives of JLR's leadership to hash out a practical path forward to support staff and plan real long-term investment.
Thousands of jobs are gone because red tape and some of the highest energy costs in the developed world are suffocating industry. ZEV mandates, likewise, punish manufacturers for failing to sell cars families don't want, while taxpayer money subsidizes foreign producers. If Prime Minister Burnham is serious about industrial jobs, he must urgently correct course and right these wrongs.
None of this is the fault of workers, but rather their corporate bosses and clueless governments, who have overseen years of underinvestment and a glaring lack of a proper industrial strategy. Staff should not have to pay the price of others' failures, which is why the Labour government — if it truly cares for the working class — must stand with the unions to protect jobs.
