America's relentless aggression against Iran, including its assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei and slaughtering of thousands of civilians, has made its participation in a World Cup hosted by such a spiteful regime untenable. Coupled with FIFA's deafening silence on these war crimes, Iran has no business or interest in lending credibility to such a morally bankrupt endeavor.
Iran’s threats to withdraw risk turning the World Cup into another arena for political messaging. A country actively engaged in regional conflict and retaliation should not expect a global sporting event to accommodate its geopolitical disputes. If Tehran chooses politics over participation, FIFA should move forward with a replacement team to preserve the tournament’s neutrality and stability.
Despite the noises coming out of Iran and the ongoing conflict between it, the U.S. and Israel, it would be too early to rule the nation out of the competition altogether. Football's successes in separating the game from politics and geopolitical uncertainty mean that onlookers will likely only be confident about Iran's World Cup status when the country makes a definitive decision.
