    The Facts

    • Violent unrest gripped West Bengal's Baruipur area after the body of an 11-year-old girl was recovered from a pond on Sunday, a day after her family reported her missing from a village on the outskirts of Kolkata.
    • A preliminary post-mortem report indicated sexual assault, head injuries and drowning before death, leading to speculation that the child was alive when she was thrown into the water. Water was found in her lungs and stomach, with excessive bleeding from a head injury also cited as a cause of death.
    • Four men — Prabhas Mondal, Ananda Sardar, Dibakar Sardar and Kabir Mollah — were arrested in connection with the crime. Investigators suspect one accused lured the girl to a shack where two others were present, and that three consumed intoxicants before the assault.

    The Spin

    Narrative A

Police dismissed a missing 12-year-old as having "left voluntarily." Locals, not law enforcement, found her body in a pond. A mob then lynched an innocent man before police could act. The new government that promised to end the old regime's lawlessness blocked the opposition leader from visiting the victim's family and produced the state's first alleged extrajudicial killing in decades.

    Narrative B

A child's murder became a political weapon within hours, with the victim's Muslim identity and the accused's Hindu identities providing communal kindling. The mob that lynched an innocent man wasn't expressing grief — it was vigilante majoritarianism with political cover. The new chief minister promised capital punishment before a trial. That sequence tells you what this story has actually become.
