The Spin

Republican narrative

Canceling this vote was the right move. Iran continues to be an imminent threat, and the president has been acting within decades of established legal precedent. Tying the commander in chief's hands mid-mission would be reckless and dangerous. Democrats have tried four times to obstruct decisive action against the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism, and fortunately four times they've come up short.

Democratic narrative

Republicans canceled this vote because they knew it would pass and all they do is run from accountability. The Senate already passed the resolution, servicemembers have died, and families are feeling it at the gas pump, yet Congress still hasn't demanded an exit strategy as the War Powers Act requires. Blocking a vote to protect an illegal, undeclared war sets a dangerous precedent and proves that Republicans believe their president is above the law.
