Canada held firm against Trump's threats and he backed down — an impressive win for Canada. Trump's threat to block the bridge opening put Michigan businesses and American workers at risk. But now it appears that all the investment has paid off and Trump is left with nothing but his grievances.
This isn't over. Canada should expect to compensate the U.S. market that drives a lot of its revenue. Trump was right to demand fairness before opening day in order to create leverage in negotiations with Canada. There's still a chance to get a better deal before cutting the ribbon, which is what the art of the deal is all about.
