Finally, the Oglethorpe school system has acknowledged the well-known fact that public school employees maintain their free speech rights when speaking as private citizens, regardless of their political stripe. Mickens both condemned Kirk's words and the violence that took his life, and she never should've been fired for expressing her opinion.

Teachers hold enormous influence over young, impressionable minds, and should possess a baseline of moral seriousness. Celebrating or endorsing violence against any public figure — regardless of political views — should disqualify someone from shaping children's thinking. Those who corrupt the teaching profession with a sick mindset have no place in any classroom.
