France finally has a voice in a chamber long rigged to shut out patriots by an unfair system of representation. Local officials who know the candidates, having warthed them govern towns and serve as deputies have handed Le Pen's party the chance to take the fight to the national stage. This is yet another decisive victory on the road to next year's presidential election.
Left narrative
A nominal milestone for the far-right in the upper chamber is a warning rather than a triumph, and treating it as destiny plays right into Le Pen's strategy. Much of this haul came from a fractured opposition plus a mainstream right convinced that borrowing extremist themes wins voters back. With the right strategy, RN can firmly be kept at bay.
