The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Sending violent criminals — including murderers, child rapists and armed robbers — to Eswatini is exactly the kind of decisive action needed to protect American communities. These aren't asylum seekers but convicted felons whose own home countries refused to take them back. The Trump administration's $5.1 million deal removes dangerous offenders from American soil while providing Eswatini with additional financial resources, making it a practical arrangement for both countries.

Anti-Trump narrative

The Trump administration's decision to pay Eswatini $5.1 million to indefinitely jail people without charge — including those with legal protections — in a repressive monarchy's high-security prison goes beyond tough immigration enforcement. Deportees are being denied lawyers and cut off from their families, despite an Eswatini Supreme Court ruling guaranteeing access to legal counsel. Amnesty International is right to call the arrangement deeply abusive.
