The Facts

Soccer's governing body FIFA confirmed that it will probe the violence that broke out between players and coaches after Spain defeated Argentina 1–0 in Sunday's World Cup final.

FIFA's statement did not attribute blame but the incident appeared to start when Argentina's Nahuel Molina swung at the midriff of Spanish captain Rodri, substituted during the game, as he ran on the pitch to celebrate the blowing of the final whistle.

Rodri turned around to confront Molina and players from both sides rushed in to intervene. In the ensuing melee, Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes struck Spain's Eric García in the throat. Spain's Gavi was then forced to the ground by Argentina's Thiago Almada, before Paredes also pushed him to the floor with a hand to the face.

FIFA's statement said: "Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the FIFA disciplinary code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents."

Not only did they instigate a violent brawl, they turned their backs on Spain as they received their medals and forewent their obligatory media commitments. They ought to be thoroughly punished for their conduct.
