Version 7.17.1
Retaking Mekelle without a shot shows a federal government willing to spare a crowded city while an armed faction that torched the peace deal rapidly collapses. A rebellion that grabs airports, shuts down phone networks and then slinks away to promise guerrilla raids has little claim to legitimacy. Restoring communications, securing key infrastructure and policing the streets is what responsible authority looks like.
Marching into Mekelle settles nothing when the promises that ended the last war were never kept — troops never withdrew, self-government was never restored and Tigray was locked out of the ballot. Drone strikes that kill civilians and forced displacement that still strands around a million people are the real record here. Seven armed groups now encircling the capital is the predictable harvest of ruling by force.
