Swiss highways throw up speed limits that swing from 120 to 80 to 100 and back again, with no construction, no curves and no villages in sight. That "safety engineering " is conditioning drivers to obey signs for the sake of obeying. Endless arbitrary limits breed contempt for the rules and turn road policy into a control exercise.

Pro-government narrative

More than 4,100 people were killed or seriously injured on Swiss roads last year, and serious injuries have refused to budge for years. At the same time, car occupant deaths hit their lowest level since records began in 1992, proof that speed management and traffic rules save lives. With speed and inattention still driving fatal crashes, easing up on limits would be reckless.
