Representation that stops at skin color is worth very little when the policies coming out of the governor's mansion make life harder for Black families. Florida's sky-high rents, fleeing insurers, book bans and teacher shortage call for a change in direction, not a friendlier face selling the same agenda. Power is measured by what gets done with it.
A Black man winning the governorship of a state that once worked hard to keep Black citizens away from power is a genuine milestone, and party labels do not erase that. Assuming Black voters owe one party unconditional loyalty has delivered decades of being taken for granted. Political diversity is leverage, and leverage is how a community finally gets served.
