DOJ Dismantles Laptop Farms Allegedly Funding North Korea
The Facts
- The U.S. Justice Department said Tuesday it conducted coordinated law enforcement actions in Ohio and Texas targeting North Korean remote IT worker schemes, including an indictment, two arrests and the seizure of 187 computer devices used to obtain jobs fraudulently.
- An indictment unsealed in Ohio charges two U.S. nationals, Michael James Bostelle of Pennsylvania and Juan Cecilio Peña Carrillo of Texas, and 10 China-based defendants over remote jobs held from 2019 to 2025 using stolen or fabricated identities. Two more defendants remain under seal.
- Prosecutors said the workers infiltrated more than 70 U.S. companies and generated about $3 million from victims in health care, cyber support, retail, communications and manufacturing across Ohio, 16 other states and the District of Columbia.
