Cuba Wins Embargo Vote at UN, Support Falls to 30-Year Low

The Facts
- The U.N. General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for an end to the U.S. Cold War-era economic embargo on Cuba on Wednesday, marking the 34th time that the measure has been approved since Havana first submitted it in 1992.
- The draft resolution was backed by 130 countries, including China, India, Japan, Russia and the U.K., while the U.S., Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Israel, Morocco, Ukraine and 10 others voted against it. Twenty-five nations abstained, including Germany and Italy, and 21 others didn't vote.
- The results are the worst since 1995, when 117 countries voted for the resolution condemning the U.S. embargo, as several countries opposed it or abstained for the first time in years. In 2025, the measure passed 165 to 7, with 12 abstentions.

Establishment-critical narrative
This is a win for Cuba because, once again, the international community has recognized that strangling a sovereign nation over politics is just wrong. Pressure and blackmail out of Washington still failed to make a cruel blockade look legitimate. Justice sits with ending this collective punishment against innocent people.
Pro-establishment narrative
This U.N. resolution is a sham, and the plunging support for it shows the world is pushing back on regime propaganda. Cuba's corruption and oppression are out in the open and wreck any claim to the moral high ground by those condemning the embargo. This result amounts to a rejection of a propaganda exercise.
