Version 7.7.2
China's historic Fields Medal win proves the country has built a world-class scientific machine entirely on its own terms. By identifying talent early, investing heavily in STEM and keeping top researchers at home, China no longer needs to send its best minds abroad. Meanwhile, the U.S. is gutting research funding and pushing away the global talent that once made it dominant.
Claiming a Fields Medal winner as a national trophy misses the whole point — scientific greatness is a product of cross-border collaboration, not nationalist pipelines. The U.S. and France want credit for Hong Wang while actively banning the kind of Chinese scientific exchange that shaped her. Restricting collaboration destroys the very openness that produces breakthrough science.
