Carney Calls for Alberta to Stay in Canada
The Facts
- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney urged Alberta to remain in Canada in a Thanksgiving message Monday, warning a week before the Oct. 19 vote on independence that separation would begin a long and uncertain process at a dangerous time for the country.
- Speaking from a classroom at his former Edmonton high school, Carney cited a proposed West Coast pipeline, new housing and high-speed rail, saying Canada is building big things, adding "you can't build big things on fault lines."
- Albertans will vote next Monday on 10 referendum questions, with the 10th asking whether the province should remain in Canada or begin the process of holding a binding referendum on separation. Advance polls opened across the province Tuesday.

Establishment-critical narrative
Promises from Ottawa are only worth something when Alberta holds real leverage, and a strong independence vote is the only leverage that sticks. Any goodwill offered today can be erased by the next Liberal government with a signature, so settling for warm words is a sucker's bet. Hostility toward Alberta runs deep in central Canada.
Pro-establishment narrative
Alberta's grievances are real, but past governments fixed many of them through reasonable federal reform and that can happen again without blowing up the country. Separatism has drawn about 1% of the vote for five decades, which says plenty about where Albertans' hearts sit. Loyalty to a united Canada is the foundation Alberta conservatism was built on, not a betrayal of it.
