The Strong and Free Elections Act is exactly the kind of reform Canada's electoral system needs right now. With the threats to Canada's democracy and information integrity mounting, Bill C-25 introduces commonsense protections and world-class safeguards to target foreign meddling, crack down on deepfakes and maintain free and fair elections.
Establishment-critical narrative
Bill C-25 sounds noble, but it opens the door to silencing everyday political expression. The provisions banning AI-generated deepfakes of candidates, in particular, are so broadly written that they could sweep up political memes and cartoons, both long staples of democratic debate, which threatens to hand the government the power to police political satire altogether.
