Canada: Officer Shot Outside Synagogue on Yom Kippur

The Facts

Belleville police said Monday that the suspect in the shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue is Sean Ward, 29, of Quinte West, and that the wounded officer is Const. Jeff Smith, a member of the force since December 2013.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said preliminary evidence indicates a man arrived by truck around 7 p.m. local time Sunday and allegedly fired a shotgun at Smith, who returned fire before a second officer arrived and also discharged a weapon.

SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette estimated 20 to 30 shots were fired. Smith remains in intensive care in critical but stable condition, while Ward is in life-threatening condition after paramedics revived him at the scene.

About 25 worshippers were inside for Yom Kippur eve services, and none were injured. Synagogue president Norm Weddum said bullets pierced the stained-glass windows and that he told everyone to get on the floor.

Weddum said the officer had been posted outside in an unmarked vehicle at the synagogue's request, an arrangement made about a week earlier. A truck parked on the driveway was left riddled with bullets, according to reports from the scene.

No Jewish family should need an armed officer outside the door just to pray on Yom Kippur, yet that is exactly what Canada has become while protesters mass outside holiday services. Leaders must name the antizionism fueling this violence, dismantle extremist networks and fund security now — before someone is killed.
