The Facts

  • A mother and daughter reported missing over the weekend were found dead near Bella Coola in a suspected grizzly attack, their family said. Insp. Jeff Tyre of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service said Wednesday that no bears had been caught in traps overnight and that it remains unclear whether more than one animal was involved.
  • The service concluded its search near Bella Coola after the second victim was found dead Tuesday afternoon in the Snooka West Trail area during efforts by conservation officers and the RCMP. The first set of remains was located Monday.
  • Family members identified the victims as Jennifer Balcarras, 48, an art therapist who worked at a school, and her daughter Selah Reed, 20, an educational assistant. Relatives reported them missing on Sunday, and police found their vehicle at a trailhead.

The Spin

Narrative A

Losing a mother and daughter who were so close leaves a deep loss for both their family and the wider community. Jennifer was a central figure in her family and, as a school counsellor, had quickly become a valued source of support for students, while Selah, just 20, had her whole life ahead of her. Their loved ones now face the painful task of grieving two generations at once while making arrangements to bring them home.

Narrative B

Sadly, the deaths of Jennifer and Selah are also a stark reminder that grizzly encounters, though statistically rare, can be fatal, even in communities accustomed to living alongside wildlife. The 2025 attack that injured 11 people in a school group shows that the danger is not limited to one-on-one confrontations. With the circumstances of the latest attack still unclear, the community faces renewed concerns about the risks bears can pose.

Pro-government narrative

Authorities are working to identify and capture the bear responsible, with traps and additional capture devices being deployed around Bella Coola. Any bears caught will be assessed, with those linked to the attack dispatched and unrelated bears released. DNA from last year's school attack will also be compared, while the Nuxalk Nation maintains curfews, transportation and counselling supports to protect a community still healing.
